WA Mitchell - Previsualization Furniture Rendering
The Company
"W.A. Mitchell Fine Furniture pieces, designed by internationally known Arthur H. Mitchell, are handcrafted with traditional old-world joinery. Cherry wedging of legs and spindles, and pegging of crests and seat backs display our continued emphasis on quality."
The Issue
When a custom piece of furniture is to be created for a client, a meeting is set up with that client. In this meeting, the client gives some information (often very little) about what they want the piece to look like. The WA Mitchell team then uses this information to create the piece they believe the client is envisioning. What happens time and again is that the client will see the piece, and say “Can you make this taller? Can you make this wider? I don’t like that. I want more of this.” The implication to WAM is that the piece needs to be disassembled, and recreated, sometimes from the ground up, oftentimes wasting materials, and always taking more valuable time. WAM needed a way to show their current, and potential clients, exactly what they will be getting, ideally in a fashion that makes changes and updates swift, painless, and most importantly, cost effective.
The Solution
Steve Milligan, previous to his being the co-founder and owner of Phenix, opened WA Mitchell’s eyes to the world of 3D Visualization, and there is no turning back. Steve sat with Dan Maxham (owner of WAM) and some notes he had taken with a client. Combining Steve’s graphic skills with Dan’s expertise in fine furniture, they created a beautiful, remarkably realistic image of the proposed piece. A print of this computer generated image was taken to the client, where they can physically write and draw on the image any changes they want. These changes were returned to Steve, and the computer model was updated in a matter of minutes. The new generated image was presented to the client and signed-off. The furniture was built one time, and one time only, wasting no time, materials, or money. The client, and WA Mitchell, could not be happier.
The Result
Dan is now able to more effectively convey his vision to his clients, and theirs to him without wasting any time or materials.
